How to choose

  • Where you'll live: you'll work across that local's area for 4 to 5 years, and some programs require you to already live there.
  • Timing: a window open now beats a better local that opens in a year. Get alerts for the ones that are closed.
  • How you're ranked: interview programs reward practice; experience-form programs reward documented work history and letters.
  • Retake rules: Los Angeles applicants report a 2-year wait to retest, so don't test there unprepared.
  • Pay against cost of living: first-year pay by local.

Common questions

Can you apply to more than one IBEW local?

Yes. Each local's training center runs its own application, and applying to several improves your chances. Some programs require that you live in their area (New York's Local 3 requires two years within 60 miles of Columbus Circle, and Pittsburgh's Local 5 a year in one of its counties), so check residency rules first.

Which IBEW locals are easiest to get into?

No local publishes acceptance rates. Programs that take applications year-round or monthly, such as Houston, give you more chances than ones with a single short window. Very large windows with caps, like Washington DC's 4,200 applications or New York's 2,000 request letters, are the most competitive.

Can you transfer between IBEW locals as an apprentice?

Transfers are not automatic; each training center decides. Some accept test results from other programs: Portland's center accepts a passing score of 5 or higher from another JATC taken in the last two years.

Which IBEW locals pay apprentices the most?

Among programs with published 2026 rates, San Jose's Local 332 starts highest at $42.99 an hour, then the East Bay's Local 595 at $31.70. Higher pay usually comes with a higher cost of living.
